United States – The Republicans in the House of Representatives in the United States named Hunter and Jim Biden for presenting false information to the US Congress on Wednesday as part of their one-year impeachment investigation.
Accusations and Actions
The Republican leaders of three House committees of the Oversight and Reform, Judiciary, and Ways & Means wrote to the acting attorney-general for going for action against Hunter Biden and his business partner James Biden.
Legal counsels for Hunter Biden and James Biden did not respond to queries regarding the matter. Nevertheless, both the parties and the White House have accused investigations into the Biden family as politically motivated cases, as reported by Associated Press.
Republicans have launched an impeachment inquiry to associate the Democratic president with his son’s business ventures, but they have not found adequate proof to make him culpable for any misconduct. Now, the committees are alleging that Hunter Biden and James Biden offered false testimonies during their several-hour grilling by the lawmakers, stating that it was part of a ploy to shield the president from accusations of participation in the family’s abroad businesses.
Statements from House Republicans
“Congress cannot allow anyone, not even the president’s son or his brother, to stand in the way of its oversight of the executive branch or deny the American people the accountability they deserve,” Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., chair of Ways & Means, said in a statement.
Specific Allegations
The misrepresented statements in question, as the chairmen explain, include comments Hunter Biden made about the position he held at a corporate entity that received millions of dollars from a foreign client. The president’s son also “relayed an entirely fictitious story” about the text messages between him and the Chinese business associate, in which the son informed the latter that he had the backing of his father with him as a bargaining tool. They also highlight statements James Biden made about whether the president, when he was still a private citizen, had a meeting with a currently defunct and accused fraudster.
Testimonies and Denial
In February, in his appearance for the closed-door deposition on Capitol Hill, Hunter Biden called the Republican impeachment inquiry “a house of cards” based on “lies”, as reported by Associated Press.
James Biden testified this earlier this year when he gave a voluntary closed door deposition on Capitol Hill responding to the House Republicans’ impeachment probe that Joe Biden “never had any involvement” in the business activities of the other members of his family.
